AfroTech 2024: The Power of Owned Media

AfroTech Then, AfroTech Now
2

In November of 2019, I had the honor of serving as the publicist for AfroTech, where I was tasked with securing media coverage for the emerging conference in Oakland, CA. At the time, AfroTech was still in its early stages of becoming the powerhouse it is today.

To help execute the vision, I subcontracted two incredible marketing communications professionals, Breanna O’Conner and Zenova King, who worked tirelessly alongside me on the ground. Together, we staffed the expo floor, secured media placements, and managed talent, ensuring that the event went off without a hitch.

What stood out most to me during this time was the challenge of garnering publicity from other media platforms. As a media outlet, you’re essentially asking competitors to promote your product — which is no small feat. Despite the odds, I managed to secure coverage from both local and national media outlets, and I initiated brand partnerships that continue to yield results today. (Go back and check out my work with Beyonce that preempted this journey, Thanks Kasi!)

Fast forward to this past week, and I had the opportunity to attend AfroTech 2024 in Houston. The growth of the conference is absolutely inspiring, and it was incredible to reconnect with peers and network with like-minded individuals who are all on their grind, innovating and pushing boundaries.

As I reflect on my experiences, I want to share a few takeaways for all the entrepreneurs, tech innovators, and go-getters out there:

1. AI Is Your Ally

Artificial intelligence is no longer a distant concept — it’s here, and it’s transforming industries. Whether you’re in tech or any other field, learning about AI is no longer optional. There are countless free resources, from events to tutorials, to help you get up to speed. But the most effective way to learn is to dive in and start using AI tools in your day-to-day work. The possibilities are endless.

2. Invest in Yourself

In uncertain times, the most valuable investment you can make is in your own growth. If you’re seeking funding, whether it’s from investors or a bank, having a clear proof of concept is essential. Make sure your vision is well-defined and that you can demonstrate traction, whether it’s through product validation or early customer feedback. Investing in yourself means building skills, expanding your knowledge, and setting the foundation for long-term success.

3. Nurture Your Relationships

The people you meet today could very well be the ones you continue to collaborate with for the next 5, 10, or even 15+ years. It’s vital to stay connected and nurture those relationships, even outside of events like AfroTech. Consistent communication is key — check in with your network throughout the year, offer support when you can, and celebrate others' successes. Relationships are currency, and you never know when they might open doors for you in the future.

AfroTech 2024 was a reminder that success in any field is not just about innovation — it’s about community, collaboration, and continuous learning. So let’s stay curious, stay connected, and keep pushing forward!
